Day 155
FEBRUARY 1, 2020
WELLINGTON, NEW ZEALAND
Wellington is spic & span clean. No trash, no graffiti, no dirt and fresh paint on everything. A real pleasure to visit.
A bicycle trip along the harbour perimeter seemed a fine way to see some of the city and exercise at the same time. We were 19 riders.
Throughout New Zealand we have heard about "the Christmas tree" (properly named the pohutukawa tree) which flowers in late December and completely covers the tree with red bottle-brush flowers. All those that we have seen on the trip so far only bore a few wilted flower remnants. But wait! In Wellington I saw this guy:
Not a bad example of the pohutukawa tree this late in the season. Incidentally, the last time we were in New Zealand about 15 years ago, I bought pohutukawa seeds and tried to grow these trees in Victoria - but failed. I had been warned that they only grow in New Zealand due to its particular climate.
Do you remember when you were a kid hearing the ringing of the bell or the jingle tune playing on the ice cream truck as it slowly rolled down your street? Well, Laura Sullivan does too - she has composed "Memories of the ice Cream Truck" as a reminder.

Along the way we passed the naked man statue titled "Solace of the Winds."
