Day 124

JANUARY 2, 2020

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA

San Diego - in what other city would you see a major airport downtown?

In today's ideal weather, seven hearty folks took a bicycle ride along San Diego's Pacific Boardwalk and afterwards around Mission Bay. A "king tide" created breaking waves on the Pacific shore that were the largest in 20 years according to a local resident - lifeguards warned bathers and surfers to stay out of the water, the waves were so fierce. Serene Mission Bay by comparison was an oasis of calm surrounded by tony bungalows and vacation apartments. All in all, a pleasant way to spend the morning.

This evening we had a theatrical send off in the Star Theatre for 80 crew members whose contracts have expired and will now enjoy 2 months holidays before returning to Viking ships. The irrepressible Cruise Director, Vicki Tassel, is one of them - a unique and admired individual who will be difficult to replace.
Setting foot on the U.S. once again prompted the thought that today's appropriate tune might just be "Democracy" by Leonard Cohen:
