Day 134

JANUARY 12, 2020

NUKU HIVA, MARQUESAS ISLANDS, FRENCH POLYNESIA

Viking Sun anchored at the town of Taiohae, Nuku Hiva Island :

Population 1,700. This morning Karen and I we walked through town, it rained twice - shops and restaurants were closed - it was Sunday. I was shocked to see only one scooter, two small cars and about 400 pick-up trucks. Gasoline is US$ 7.20 a gallon - what's going on here? Really, there's not much of interest on this island. It's pretty though. BTW - they have antiques, and they work. Take a look! :

Past experience shows that the best way to see and understand any place a cruise ship visits is to get into the hinterland. This afternoon that's what we did. On a bench seat in the back of a covered, yet open sided, pick-up truck we spent 4 hours driving up and over mountains. We saw a few places of mild interest, so now we know the basic layout of the island, but the best part was a photo op on our way back to the ship (a bit hazy, I'm afraid):

But wait! Once we returned to our suite we went out onto the veranda. And this is what we saw:

What the.......? It looked to be about eight to ten feet across. The white head and white wingtips surprised me. Curious to know the type of ray this is, I tried google.com. Nothing! I found hundreds of ray photos but none that looked like this one. Any ideas?

OK, we've done the cowboy stuff. Time for end of day rest and relaxation music. Something like Diane Arkenstone's "The Secret Garden".
