Day 92
DECEMBER 1, 2019
PUNTA ARENAS, CHILE
As we approached sun-bathed Punta Arenas (meaning Sandy Point) on a late Saturday afternoon, the sight inspired optimism that our visit might have value.
Disembarking at Punta Arenas on a frigid, windy, threatening-rain, Sunday morning we are not dismayed that there are no shops open - this podunk town of 125,000 looks like a ghost town and feels small. In common with most South American port cities, plenty of the large buildings near the docks are ancient, decrepit and empty The streets are surprisingly clean, yet the ever-present graffiti, most of it displaying political dissent, spoils the effect. Our stroll is not long, the ship seems more inviting.
