Day 69

CRUISING THE ATLANTIC OCEAN

At this time of year the Amazon River's water level is at its lowest. On our way back from Manaus the ship was obliged to reduce speed several times for safety's sake. As a result, Viking Sun has fallen six hours behind schedule which necessitates cancelling our stop at Recife. Others on board who previously had been to Recife said that we would not be missing much.

Today we crossed the Equator. This created an opportunity for the Viking staff to put on a special event, the Equator Crossing Ceremony. Polywogs must appear before Aegir, Norse God of the Seas, and confess their crimes, take the plunge, kiss the fish and shoot the traditional Aquavit thus earning the title of Shellback. A video of the ceremony would have been better but my blog program does not accept videos. Use your imagination.

Last evening Karen and I were invited by General Manager, Norbert Tesar, to an exclusive dinner at The Restaurant for a dozen Ultimate World Cruisers ("Ultimates"). Over the course of our eight month journey we will occasionally dine and make acquaintance with all the Ultimates.

I have just learned that the video, "Over a Barrel", mentioned in my November 5th blog,  is no longer available. The gist of the video presents the evidence that several US institutions including The Rockerfeller Foundation, The Koch Brothers Foundation and others have been aggressively funding Canadian protest organizations in order to shut down Alberta oil production, its main competition. Who is responsible for shutting down the video? It has been suggested that we live in a new world now, a world where goals are achieved by influencing attitudes through social media. Every dirty trick in the book operates in the marketplace these days. However, the short trailer for Over a Barrel remains:

Comments

  1. Disturbing info in the video, but not surprising. Corporate greed drives the world.
