Day 35

SEA DAY (A calm sea)

First thing we saw as we looked out our window this morning was a pod of small dolphins passing in the opposite direction. How do you tell dolphins and porpoises apart you might ask. Well, the dolphin's dorsal fin is hooked or curved while the porpoise has a triangular dorsal fin. The preponderance of this kind of mammal in the North Atlantic Ocean is the dolphin.

Not surprisingly, today we also saw several types of ships - tankers, containerships, a cruise liner, etc. - coming and going - this coast is a major shipping lane, after all. I hope we see whales soon.

As we approach Halifax I can't help thinking of Stan Rogers who popularized down to earth Easy Coast music during the 1970s and 80s. He often played at the Ebony Knight, a  downstairs coffee shop in Hamilton, Ontario where I grew up; coffee shops were the rage then. Sadly, Stan died in the Air Canada crash in Cincinnati in 1983, only 34 years old. Listen here to the man as he tells his story.

This is one of my favourite Stan Rogers songs, "45 Years"
