Day 156

FEBRUARY 2, 2020

AKAROA, NEW ZEALAND

On March 15, 2019 Christchurch New Zealand was devastated by a major earthquake. As a result, the Viking Sun is not able to dock there. Instead, the ship will stop around the corner at Akaroa.

Karen and I had visited Christchurch several years ago so we chase the 9 hour excursion that included a jet boat ride and a 4X4 trip into the highlands. The 35 minute boat ride along the Waikato River reached a speed of 80 kph and did a few 360 degree turns - good fun. The one hour jeep ride was a punishing 2 mile, 5 kph "tour" driving past foraging sheep and cattle - a complete waste of time.

Akaroa is a gorgeous town that began as a French settlement and retains its French character. It would have been a far better place to have spent the day. Ah well!
